Numbers 18:1-32

Aaron and the tribe of Levi were set aside by God for the purpose of ministering in the Tabernacle.  They were to do the work of the ministry for the people and as a result the people were to support them with food and finances through the sacrifices that were brought to the altar.  This was a position of great importance for both God and the people and was not to be taken lightly by the Levites or by the people.  God’s work is to be done with excellence and is worthy of the support required to make it happen.  Ministers and there members would do well to remember these basic principles.

THE MINISTRY IS A PRIVILEGE: Aaron and his sons were given special responsibilities in the work of the Tabernacle.  All of the tribe of Levi was dedicated to the service in some way but they were limited in their access to the tabernacle itself.  Those who were not separated unto this task would be killed if they approached areas of service that were dedicated only to the Levites or if the Levites were to invade areas of service that were given to Aaron and his sons.  We all must serve faithfully within the framework of the responsibilities that God has given us.  Any service in ministry is an honor to perform.  We must not take the work of the Lord lightly or do it without a commitment to quality and reverence.  Too often our service is seen to be some sort of an obligation as opposed to the highest honor afforded to man on this earth.  God is pleased when we fulfill our service to Him with grateful hearts and do it with excellence and faithfulness.

THE MINISTRY REQUIRES PROVISION: Those who minister have needs just like those who do other tasks.  Since Aaron and his sons along with the other Levites had so many tasks that were related to the Tabernacle they were unable to work.  God established that the tithes and the sacrifices that were given on the altar were to be used to support the tribe of Levi.  They did not have any land or opportunity to provide for themselves other than being supported by the people.  It is a good and God established principle that those who minister to our need spiritually should be able to expect to be supported by those who are being served.  Ministers should not be embarrassed by this and members should give to this purpose with thankful and glad hearts.  God makes provisions through His people to those who minister on His behalf.  It is a blessing to be used as an instrument of God whether that be through ministering or making provision for ministers.  It is always an honor to serve the Lord.
