Proverbs 15:1-33

There are certain things that we must do if we want to demonstrate wisdom in our lives.  There are also other things that we must work to avoid doing.  Wisdom will always have an impact on the way that we think, how we respond to situations in life and especially what our actions will be.  God cares very deeply about all of these things and has given us very valuable instructions as to how we can walk in wisdom.

WATCH OUR LANGUAGE: Our words provide a very good window into our hearts.  We can see clearly what is in a man’s heart by what comes out of his mouth.  Our language or words have a great impact on those who are around us and will demonstrate whether or not we are wise.  If we are wise we will answer with soft words instead of harsh words.  When someone is burning with anger we can use our words to throw a bucket of water on the situation or to throw a bucket of gasoline on the fire of anger.  Wise men will use language that is full of knowledge and understand that their every word is being heard and judged by God.  We must learn to be gentle in our speech as well as teachable when others are speaking to us.  Our goal should be to acquire as much knowledge as we can and then use our words to spread that knowledge to others.  Our language should be filled with prayer and reverence towards God and respect towards our fellow man.

WALK IN LOVE: Those who are wise are abundant in their love for other people as well as for the Lord.  They have a great respect for the opinions of others; they gladly receive instruction and reproof from others and they experience joy as well as spread cheer to all who are around them.  God wants us to experience His joy and then effectively spread that joy to our neighbors.  It is better to love God and have few resources than to be rich with no fear of the Lord.  Love is truly a great treasure and far more valuable than any amount of money or comfort.  We must learn to be patient with one another and not stir up strife and anger in our relationships.  Our love for God and love of other is the true demonstration of wisdom in the way that we live.

WANT TO LISTEN: We must recognize that wisdom does not come from within our own hearts.  God is truly the only source of wisdom, but He communicates that wisdom to us through His Word as well as through the instruction of other godly and wise individuals.  If we want to be wise we must learn to listen to the parents that God has given us.  We do not choose our families, but God places us into our family because He desires that we learn from that instruction.  Our plans will fail if we refuse to listen to the counsel of the godly people who are around us.  The instructions of others can save us from a multitude of heartbreak and even eternal judgment.  We must learn to listen to humble people that are satisfied in their relationships with the Lord and know how to teach His Word to us.  When we find godly people who pray, know God’s Word and rejoice in their relationship with Him; we must listen closely to their instruction, correction and humbly follow their example.
