Psalm 135:1-21
We are called to praise the Lord. All who desire to please God with their lives
and have the privilege of knowing Him and serving Him are to use their lives to
praise Him. There are many reasons that
we have to praise Him. Certainly He is
worthy of our praise but in addition to that, it is pleasant to praise the
Lord. The call to worship God is an act
of obedience, but it is one in which we should take great delight. Worship is pleasing to God and pleasing to
us. This Psalm points to several reasons
that we should praise the Lord and outlines the content of our worship.
HIS SOVEREIGNTY: God is the creator of the heavens and the
earth and is in control of all that happens on the earth. He is self-sufficient and does according to
His desires. He has not limits and there
are no gods who can compete with Him.
Wind, rain, storms and all that exists is in His hand. Certainly God is worthy of our praise and
worship for His greatness. When we
praise God for His power it stands as a reminder to us of Who is in control and
allows us to keep our own lives in proper perspective.
OUR LIBERTY: God had demonstrated His power over not only
the elements but also the nations by setting Israel free from the captivity in
Egypt. He plundered the nation of Egypt
in order to set the nation of Israel free.
They were slaves in captivity without any hope of freedom apart from
God. But God did set them free. We too were captivated by sin until the Lord
set us free in Christ. We are liberated
from sins power which should fill our hearts with gratitude and our lips with praise
to Him.
HIS DEITY: We serve, praise and worship the only God. All other objects of worship are idols. They are made by man’s hands or by man’s
affections but they are powerless. They
are made after the various forms of God’s creation but they do not have the
life that God has bestowed on His creatures much less the life that God
possesses in Himself. He alone is God
and He alone should be the object of our affections and worship.
