Psalm 139:1-24

The sovereignty of God is a truth that should both comfort and concern us.  Unfortunately, it also often confuses us.  David makes it very clear to us that God is sovereign and explains very clear to us what God’s sovereignty implies in our lives.  In theological terms we would say that God is omniscient, omnipresent and omnipotent or that God is all knowing, always present and all powerful.  These are precious theological truths about God that are full of implications in each of our lives that should change the way that we live.

GOD KNOWS EVERYTHING: There is nothing that we can hide from God.  He knows everything that we do.  He knows every thought that we have.  He knows every word that comes out of our mouth.  He knows the words that almost come out of our mouths.  He knows the motives behind all that we do and say.  He knows every emotion that we feel.  There is nothing about us that God does not know.  What is more concerning is that He never forgets anything.  What is more amazing is that even knowing all of these things, He still loves us.  The grace and mercy of God are wonderful and astounding.  Clearly God’s intimate knowledge about us ought to change the way we act, think, talk, feel and desire.

GOD IS EVERYWHERE: There is nowhere that we can go in order to escape from God.  The presence of God is a mysterious thing that I don’t believe we are capable of fully comprehending.  God is spirit, meaning that He does not have a body.  However, Jesus, God’s Son, is now a man that does have a body.  The presence of God is not always equally evident.  Moses was given a unique, very brief experience in a little bit of the presence of God and His face glowed for years because of it.  In heaven we will experience the presence of God in ways that are very different from our current reality.  However, the point of this Psalm is simply to say that there is nowhere on the earth that we can go to hide from the Lord.  It is absolutely futile to think that we can hide any sin from the Lord no matter how alone and hidden we think we are, God is there.

GOD MADE EVERYONE: When we were conceived in our mother’s wombs, God was there putting all of our parts together.  His hand is in and over all of creation.  Every single one of us were made by God, which means every single one of us are responsible to God.  He has the authority over all of us by rite of creation.  He has determined every detail about our lives.  All things from our looks to our health and length of life are in His hands.  Our place is not to question the Creator but it is to be thankful for all the He has done and given us.  Our position is to worship Him for that is the purpose for which He created us.  We must consider the fact that we are created by God as we recognize our duty to obey and love Him.

GOD JUDGES EVERYBODY: All of mankind is responsible to God and will be judged by God.  David cries out for God to judge his enemies for they have been rebellious against God and caused great harm to David along the way.  David calls on God to bring down judgment on these evil men.  God has every right to do this, and one day He will call all of mankind to stand before Him and give an account.  This is why it is very wise to pray as David prays for God to search his heart and reveal his heart to him so that he might be better prepared to stand before the Lord.  We all have a very hard time seeing the sin of our own lives but God will faithfully reveal the sins of those who seek to know them.  We should forever be grateful that those who have trusted Christ will never be condemned in judgment.  However, we will give an account before the Lord and must prepare for that day.
