Hebrews 3:1-6

Therefore, holy brothers, you who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession, who was faithful to him who appointed him, just as Moses also was faithful in all God's house.  For Jesus has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses—as much more glory as the builder of a house has more honor than the house itself.  (For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God.). Now Moses was faithful in all God's house as a servant, to testify to the things that were to be spoken later, but Christ is faithful over God's house as a son. And we are his house, if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope.

The author of Hebrews changes from demonstrating the Jesus was greater than the angels to showing how Jesus was greater than Moses.  Though there are many similarities between Jesus and Moses, Jesus is beyond comparison.  It is idolatry to worship any man.  The Jews put Moses on a pedestal but put Jesus on a cross.  Moses is worthy of our admiration but only Jesus is worthy of our adoration.

JESUS WAS FAITHFUL IN GOD’S HOUSE: Jesus is the apostle and high priest appointed by God to be both the Founder and Intercessor of our faith.  He was completely faithful to fulfill His role in the Church.  It is because of His work on our behalf that we can partake in the heavenly calling.  Moses was faithful in his calling to lead the children of Israel, but we know that he was far from perfect.  Jesus was perfectly faithful having never sinned and was the perfect sacrifice on our behalf which allows us to be a part of the family of God.

JESUS WAS BUILDER OF GOD’S HOUSE: Jesus is the one who established the church, and He built it.  He is the Creator of all things and everyone.  His glory is revealed in creation and by creation.  Moses was created by God so is simply a part of the building.  The greater glory belongs to the Creator as opposed to the creation.  It is the task of the creation to worship and give glory to the Creator.  While Moses and other men have demonstrated faithfulness in their function; they are pointing to the glory of God and not their own.

JESUS WAS SON OVER GOD’S HOUSE: Jesus is the Son of God.  He is the Heir of all things including Israel and the Church.  His position in the house of God is unique as the only begotten Son.  Moses was simply a servant in the house that belongs to the Lord.  The servant is under the Son and should never be considered of higher honor than the Son.  Moses was a faithful servant in his ministry to the Lord but should never be confused with the Lord.

APPLICATION: Faithfulness is the standard that is expected for all of us as we respond to the faithfulness of Christ.  We are to worship Him as our Creator and bring glory to His name.  We are His inheritance and it is our duty to serve Him.
