Psalm 110:1-7

The reign of Jesus Christ on this earth is very unique in the sense that it is, in one sense, already here and yet in another sense, not yet here.  The reign of Christ over the earth has been constant from before the foundations of the earth until this day and will continue for all of eternity.  However, due to the fall of man, there is another kingdom at play on the earth that is orchestrated by the enemy of our souls, Satan.  As long as the kingdom of Satan is operational of the earth, the kingdom of Christ is not yet fully realized.  That is why this Psalm starts out with Christ seated at the right hand of the Father “UNTIL” His enemies are made His footstool.  We must never doubt or forget about Christ’s current sovereignty over the earth, but we must also recognize and live in light of Christ’s coming reign where Satan will be crushed and we will be perfectly transformed by the power of the Gospel and be able to enjoy the reign of Christ for all of eternity.

THE PROMISE OF CHRIST’S REIGN: God has promised that Jesus will reign as king over the earth, that Christ will fulfill all the promises made to Abraham, Moses and David.  This decision has clearly been made in eternity past and it will come about.  At time in the history of this universe is coming when all men will worship and praise the Lord.  We will offer ourselves as holy and living sacrifices unto the Lord.  From east to west, north to south and dawn to dawn all men everywhere will live in submission to and in worship of the Lord Jesus Christ.  God has determined that this will happen and it is an unstoppable, infallible reality.  The promise of Christ’s coming reign is secure and we should live in light of this promise every single day as we wait for it to occur.

THE POWER OF CHRIST’S REIGN: The reign of Christ is not like any other reign that has occurred throughout history.  We have repeatedly seen one nation overthrow another nation in order to expand or establish a kingdom.  However, with the passage of time, the conquering nation is usually conquered by yet another nation in a relatively short period of time.  Christ’s reign will not be like that.  His reign will be an all-powerful and everlasting kingdom.  All the existing kings and nations will be judged.  All competing kingdoms will be crushed and shattered never more to rise again.  Every nation will live in submission to the Lord and they will worship Him for ever more.  The reign of Christ will be so powerful that there will be complete and permanent peace.  We must learn to look forward to and be prepared to participate in this glorious kingdom that is already in place and yet still coming in its full manifestation.
