Psalm 145:1-21

Worship God is what we were created to do.  We are to speak and sing of His greatness and the wonderful works of His hands.  Unfortunately, we are often too busy trying to attract attention to the works of our hands that we take very little time to tell others about the works of His hands.  We take God’s mercy and grace for granted to the point that we do not even notice it for ourselves; much less put forth the effort to tell others about it.  This over awareness of self and under awareness of God is perhaps the most common form of idolatry.  We are far too easily impressed with ourselves and other people and far too ignorant of the presence and power of God in our lives.  David helps us greatly in this Psalm by calling us to worship.

HOW WE SHOULD WORSHIP: There is not exact formula for how we should worship, but David does give us some great examples of how he worshiped and that should shed some light on the subject for us.  We should worship God by exalting His name.  We exalt the name of God by speaking and singing about Him and the wonderful works that He has done in and around us.  David makes the commitment to worship the Lord forever as well as to worship Him every day.  Our commitment to worship God must be consistent and for as long as we live.  It is not enough to set one day of the week aside for worship, it is to be a lifestyle that is a vital part of every day of our lives.  It is not enough to worship God in certain seasons of our lives.  We are to worship God not matter what circumstances surround us and what season of life we are experiencing.  Worship is for the young and the old, the healthy and sick and the happy and sad.  We are to worship God by telling future generations the stories of God’s goodness in our lives.  In order to do that we must set aside time to think about and meditate on all He has done for us.  Once these things become clear to us we should spread His fame, His goodness and His righteousness to all that are around us.

WHY WE SHOULD WORSHIP: Perhaps the greatest reason that we should worship is because that is what God made us to do.  However, beyond the question of purpose, God has given us many reasons to praise and worship His greatness.  God is gracious, merciful and slow to anger.  These qualities about God are what make it possible for us to survive.  We have failed God miserably and yet He still takes pity upon us and patiently waits for our repentance and provides for our forgiveness.  God is powerful and His kingdom is everlasting and all encompassing.  God does not have any competition.  Certainly men and Satan try to compete with God but it is really no competition at all.  A two year old boy may think that he is “wrestling” with his father on the living room rug, but with one move the child can find himself being lifted helplessly in the air or being powerless under a small portion of his daddy’s weight.  God is sovereign King of the universe and His power and authority are beyond compare.  God is faithful.  He will keep all of His promises and do just exactly what He has promised to do.  He will meet every need of those who trust and fear Him.  God is righteous and holy.  There is not sin in Him and all His motives are pure.  God is near to us, always present with us and cares very deeply for us.  He is not some distant creature that takes no interest in lowly men.  He loves us and cares for us and takes great delight in our worship of Him.
