Job 41:1-34

God continues to confront Job with his arrogance by demonstrating His greatness in and over creation.  God describes Leviathan to Job and questions if he has the ability to tame him or even touch him.  This great animal seems to be like nothing that we have on earth today.  The closest description that we would have for this great beast would be a dragon.  Apparently, when Job walked the Earth there were dragons or Leviathan that were practically invisible before man.  However, God looks at this great and fearful creature like we would look at a kitten.  God is in complete control of this world and there is nothing that frightens Him.  I have a feeling that if we were to encounter a dragon today that we would stand in awe of it and were it to be loose in our back yard we would tremble in fear of it.  If that is true of Leviathan; than we certainly ought to do the same before the Lord.

WE ALL ANSWER TO GOD: Job has been acting as if God answered to him.  He has suffered greatly without just cause in his mind.  Job’s suffering was not brought on by Job’s sinfulness, but it was allowed by God.  Job longs for an explanation as to why God would allow such a terrible thing to happen in his life.  It is certainly normal for us to what to know why we suffer and desire and explanation from God.  However, Job has been insisting on this explanation to the point that he has called into question the justice of God.  The truth is that God is always just in whatever He does and He is not required to explain Himself to anyone.  It is not our position to question Him or make demands of Him.  He who is capable of creating a beast so mighty as Leviathan should certainly be the object of our love and worship.

WE SHOULD BE IN AWE OF GOD: God’s power is clearly seen through the things that He has created and His control over those things.  God questions Job about how he interacts with this mighty beast called Leviathan.  This is an animal that man is unable to dominate, its size strikes fear in man.  It is covered in impenetrable armor.  It breaths fire and seems to be able to live on either the land or the sea.  A man who would contend with this animal is destined for defeat and destruction.  The same is true about God.  God made this great beast and has complete dominance over it.  We are to be humbled in His presence and stand in awe of the greatness of God.  If we have an accurate perception of God, we will not question His ways.  Rather, we will bow down before Him in praise and adoration.
