Psalm 63:1-11
Our desires reveal our hearts and our true objects of
worship. If that is true than we can
certainly determine the depth and reality of our relationship with God by
evaluating our desire for God. We all
have many desires, some of them are natural and legitimate while others are
sinful. We all desire peace, comfort,
health, security and love just to name a few.
However, each of these legitimate desires can become idols in our lives
if we begin to have a greater desire for them than we have for the Lord. David describes his desire for God as the thirst
of a man in the desert without water.
Our worship is always driven by our desires. If our passions and affections are for our
own pleasures; than these pleasures are the true gods of our lives. Our desire for God must be the greatest
desire of our lives.
GOD BRINGS SATISFACTION TO THOSE WHO DESIRE HIM:
Satisfaction can be a wonderful blessing or it can be a terrible curse. God wants us to be content with the
provisions He has given us and find our full satisfaction in our relationship with
Him. However, we must never be satisfied
with the level of our relationship with God.
We should always desire a deeper and fuller walk with the Lord. David speaks of thirst, which is a desire for
more, but he also speaks of satisfaction, which is delight in what God has
already given. Our worship must always
have these two aspects: our desire for God and our delight in God. When we truly contemplate the Lord and His
love becomes more precious to us than our very lives; then our hearts will be
full of praise for Him. When we remember
His abundant mercy and grace we will sing for joy and rest in His abundant
provision.
GOD BRINGS DESTRUCTION TO THOSE WHO DESPISE HIM: There are
those who seek to destroy the Lord’s work, and in the case of this Psalm, the
Lord’s anointed king. These people despise the Lord and their only desire is
for their own promotion. They are
willing to lie and kill or do anything in order to achieve their own
agenda. Wicked and godless men who have
no fear of the Lord and no desire for Him will ultimately be destroyed. They will never find any satisfaction in this
life and they will only find torment in the eternal life that follows this
life. Man’s desire for idols and to be
idolized will always leave him unsatisfied and will ultimately lead him to
eternal destruction.
